Prepare your soil for potatoes during the winter with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. About a fortnight before planting add a generous sprinkling of potato fertiliser.

Don’t forget to save your egg boxes for chitting your potatoes in, ideally about six weeks before you plan to start planting.

Once you have received your potato tubers you need to leave them to chit (i.e. they start to sprout). Potatoes are categorised into three main types depending on the timing of their maturity, ‘first earlies’, ‘second earliers’ and ‘maincrops’. First earlies crop from May, second earlies crop through the summer and maincrops well into the autumn.
