Description
Hellebores are prized for their elegant, cup-shaped flowers in late winter and spring. Hellebore x hybridus ‘Mixed’ will bring some of the earliest blooms of the year to your beds, borders and containers. These versatile hardy perennials thrive in those tricky shaded corners, and create useful evergreen ground cover beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Their colourful blooms provide a valuable source of early nectar for pollinating insects and make charming cut flowers for a vase indoors. Height and spread: 40cm (16").

How to Grow
Plant hellebores in neutral or alkaline soil, in dappled shade. Hellebores prefer a moist, humus rich, fertile soil that does not dry out in summer or sit waterlogged in winter. When growing hellebores on heavy clay or free draining gravel soils, add plenty of well rotted leaf mould or other organic matter to the soil prior to planting.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
Mulch hellebore plants with well rotted manure or garden compost each spring. Hellebores resent disturbance after planting and may take some time to re-establish. However when clumps become overcrowded, lifting and dividing of hellebores should be undertaken immediately after flowering. Caution: Hellebore sap may irritate the skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
