Carica Papaya plants make attractive foliage specimens, and in the right conditions you may even grow your own tropical fruits! These exotic tender plants require high temperatures and humidity all year round so they are best grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. Height: up to 6m (19’). Spread: 2m (6’,6").
Sow seeds March to May into pots or trays of moist soil-based potting compost mixed with some coarse horticultural sand and cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of around 25C (77F) until after germination, which usually takes 21-30 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not wet.
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots of soil-based potting compost mixed with coarse horticultural sand. When Carica papaya plants are well grown, pot on as required and grow in a bright, humid greenhouse or conservatory at a temperature of 22c (72F). In winter ensure a minimum temperature of 15-18C (59-64F) is maintained. During the summer months, papaya plants can be moved outdoors to a sheltered, sunny patio.
