Flowering Period:
June, July, August

March, April, May

Sow seeds March to May into pots or trays of moist soil-based potting compost mixed with some coarse horticultural sand and cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of around 25C (77F) until after germination, which usually takes 21-30 days. Do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not wet.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots of soil-based potting compost mixed with coarse horticultural sand. When Carica papaya plants are well grown, pot on as required and grow in a bright, humid greenhouse or conservatory at a temperature of 22c (72F). In winter ensure a minimum temperature of 15-18C (59-64F) is maintained. During the summer months, papaya plants can be moved outdoors to a sheltered, sunny patio.

Feed and water Pawpaw plants regularly. Take care that the soil drains freely as Carica papaya is particularly sensitive to water logging. When fruits set, use a high potash feed. Carica papaya is self fertile. Harvest Pawpaws in early autumn when they turn orange red. Caution: Pawpaw leaves may irritate the skin and eyes.
