A compact Cape Gooseberry that is suitable for containers on the patio, or for growing in the greenhouse. Golden Berry 'Little Lanterns' produces abundant orange 'Chinese Lantern' fruits that can be harvested in autumn and make an attractive edible decoration for desserts. Physalis peruviana is half hardy and therefore tends to be grown as an annual in the UK. Height and spread: 90cm (36").
Water Physalis plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist and feed regularly with a high potash plant food. Golden Berry plants may require staking. Harvest Chinese Lantern fruits in autumn when the husks turn brittle and pale brown in colour, and the fruits within them are a bright golden orange. Store Golden Berries in their husks in a warm place indoors. Caution: Except for the berry itself, all parts of Golden Berry plants are harmful if eaten.
