Golden Berry Duo

Sow Physalis seeds from February to March at a temperature of 18-21C (64-70F), on the surface of a good quality seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite. Keep the soil damp but not wet and do not exclude light. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes up to 21 days. When Chinese Lantern seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on at a minimum temperature of 15C (60F) until they are 20cm (8") high. When all risk of frost has passed, plant Golden Berries in any well drained soil in full sun or transplant into growbags in the greenhouse.

Water Physalis plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist and feed regularly with a high potash plant food. Golden Berry plants may require staking. Harvest Chinese Lantern fruits in autumn when the husks turn brittle and pale brown in colour, and the fruits within them are a bright golden orange. Store Golden Berries in their husks in a warm place indoors. Caution: Except for the berry itself, all parts of Golden Berry plants are harmful if eaten.
