Decorate your favourite desserts with the abundant edible fruits of these Golden Berry plants. The bright orange berries are enclosed in a papery husk giving the appearance of a Chinese lantern. Physalis peruviana is half hardy and therefore tends to be grown as an annual, in the greenhouse or on a sunny patio. Height and spread: up to 90cm (36").
Water Physalis plants frequently, to keep the compost evenly moist and feed regularly with a high potash plant food. Golden Berry plants may require staking. Harvest Chinese Lantern fruits in autumn when the husks turn brittle and pale brown in colour, and the fruits within them are a bright golden orange. Store Golden Berries in their husks in a warm place indoors. Caution: Except for the berry itself, all parts of Golden Berry plants are harmful if eaten.
