Sunflower 'Russian Giant' - RHS Garden Explorers Children's Seeds

Helianthus annuus

Hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

I could be the tallest flower in your garden. Can you grow the tallest, sunniest sunflower? When I have finished flowering leave the flowerheads out to feed the birds over the winter. Height: 2m+.Did You Know? - Not all sunflowers are yellow or tall. Look for furry-looking teddy bear types, different colours and ones with several flowers on one stem.

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Companion planting: Try growing sunflowers with chives to deter aphids.

Place in a warm place in a light position. Keep the pots well watered until my seedlings appear - about 7 days. Move the plants to a bright windowsill, water regularly until I am well grown.Sow me outdoors from May to early June Choose where you want me to grow. Rake the ground so it is nice and fine and remove any big stones. Sow me 20mm deep and 40cm apart. Make sure the rows are 45-60cm apart.

For indoor sown plants - when all risk of frost has gone, plant me outside somewhere sunny and well-drained.

Measure how tall your sunflowers grow and how big the flower head is.

  1. Russian Sunflowers

    By caroline Baum 05-10-2010

We had great fun this summer as the three children went into the garden, dug a small hole and placed their little sunflower in the ground. We watered the tiny seed every day and slowly a small stem appeared. What joy the children had on their faces when their sunflower opened up. Then they became quite competitive to see whose sunflowers was the tallest. My daughter had the tallest but my eldest son his is still flowering so it lasted the longest. Amazing fun for all the family. Caroline Baum
