Perennials can be sown from February to July for flowering in the following year. Fill a seed tray with good, free-draining, damp, seed compost. Sow seed on the surface of the compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of dry vermiculite or finely sieved compost. Place the seed and tray in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag and keep at around 15-20C (59-68F) until the seeds germinate. Don’t exclude light as this helps germination.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them individually into 7.5cm (3") pots or multi-cell trays and grow them on in cooler conditions. When perennials are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade, at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Deadhead faded perennial flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms to be produced. Caution: Aquilegia, Delphinium, and Lupin may irritate the skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
