Sow February to June or September to October on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination can take 14-30 days.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 inch)pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12 inches)apart.

For best results, provide a humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade.

  1. Low germination success

    By Rosalind Jordan 20-07-2016

Few seeds germinated but the few that have are looking very healthy. I expect them to reach mature size in a couple of years.

  2. Five seeds germinated (Even in Winter)

    By M Chowdhary 29-11-2015

I wanted to plant my seeds before first frost, but the weather was cold around 08degrees C at night. But the seeds germinated and have three leaves now. Thanks to Thompson and Morgan for providing a variety of seeds to us.
