Geranium maderense

Giant Herb Robert, Madeira Cranesbill

 Customer Rating
Truly amazing! Resembling a small Palm Tree, with a stout trunk and radiating stems of palmate foliage. This species requires some shelter In the garden, or is perfect for a large pot in the conservatory or the greenhouse border. Velvety, magenta pink flowers are produced in panicles aloft the exotic foliage. Height: 90-150cm (3-5ft).

Flowering Period:
March, April, May, June, July, August

March, April, May

Sowing Time: March to May. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Do not cover the seed. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination can take 1-3 months and may be erratic.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 23-30cm (9-12in) apart. For best results, provide any ordinary well-drained soil in full sun.

Geranium maderense may behave as a biennial, flowering in the second year from sowing, or may be more long-lived as a perennial. This species needs protection so should be kept frost-free for the winter months or grown in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Reviews
  1. Well worth the money

    By Peter Humphrey 10-04-2012

All seeds germinated in under a month ( they were sown February2012). the plants are now just over 6" high. The foliage is already looking very exotic, it looks more interesting than the photograph. It will be interesting when the plants are fully grown. Watch this space!
