Sow Amsonia seeds from February to July on the surface of a peat/sand mix seed compost and gently firm down. Keep the soil damp but not wet and do not exclude light. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag at a temperature of at 13-15C (55-60F) for 2-3 weeks. Move to a refrigerator (not freezer) for 3-6 weeks, after which return the tray to the recommended germination temperature. Keep the compost moist at all times. Germination can be very slow taking from 30-365 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7cm (3") pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to move outdoors. Plant Amsonia at a distance of 30cm (12") apart, in any well drained soil in sun or dappled shade.

Amsonia plants are slow growing but large clumps may be divided in spring when necessary. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.

  1. Not the recommended way!

    By Peter Humphrey 23-04-2012

I sowed the seeds as per instructions and promptly dropped the pot, spilling the contents. I scooped up the potting medium and put in the pot and left it on the side in the greenhouse. Five weeks later, low and behold greenshoots appeared. In fact 21 of the 30 seeds have germinated . they have been planted on into 2" pots and are growing well. Having done a little more investigating, these grow well in N.E states of the USA so they must be fairly hardy. Let's see what happens now!
