Sow lobelia from late winter to mid spring on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-24C (65-75F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When lobelia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun or semi-shade on moist, fertile, well drained soil at a distance of 10cm (4") apart.

Feed and water lobelia plants frequently throughout the summer to promote an endless supply of delicate lobelia flowers. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.

  1. Beautiful, tough and easy to grow!

    By Jenny Chapman 22-11-2011

Long ago I tried growing lobelias from seed and failed miserably. Since then I have bought bedding plants rather than try again. But I can no longer afford to do that, so I sowed T&M's "Blue Cascade" in February and they are still flowering now, in late November! The colour is a really beautiful blue, light in the sun, darker in the shade. And the plants thrive anywhere. I have some on a wall facing due north, and some facing south. They have survived plenty of wind, rain, and even snail attacks, growing back again quickly if damaged. So long as they don't dry out, they seem to stand up to anything. Sow early in gentle heat for the best rate of success. The tiny seedlings are slow to get going and grow on, so be patient. Once established there's no stopping them! They are so tiny - and so many come up - that I'm going to sow in little units next time, so each baby plant can grow on undisturbed and will be easy to plant out. I've already bought next year's seed - the same again!
