For earliest flowers from early June onwards sow September/October and over winter under glass, alternatively for flowers mid-late July onwards sow January-February. Sow on the surface of a 3in pot of good free draining seed compost and cover with a very light sprinkling of Vermiculite. Seal in a polythene bag and don't exclude light. Germination takes 10-28 days at 18-20C (65-70F).

Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow cool and well lit. Keep September/October sowings at 10-13C (50-55F) through the winter in good light and well ventilated. Water carefully so they don't sit in cold wet soil. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out late spring after all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart in a sheltered spot in light, well drained soil and full sun. For window boxes, baskets, containers, etc, allow 15cm (6in) between plants.

Remove spent flowers regularly to prolong the flowering season. Plants will over winter in a frost free greenhouse, conservatory etc if lifted in the autumn.

Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.

  1. A Real Star!

This packet of seeds for 99p has to be the best investment ever! I started off my seeds back in October and overwintered the plants in a cold greenhouse. Not only did this plant prove hardy, but it has just rewarded me with a profusion of flowers. This plant is beautiful and a lot taller than it appears in photos. Everything about this plant is beautiful. It has great height and the small star-like flowers are so delightful. Already a firm favourite.
