Plant Lathyrus latifolius in any fertile, well drained garden soil in full sun or semi-shade. When planting perennial sweet pea plants, add plenty of organic matter to the soil, such as well rotted manure or garden compost. Train the stems onto a suitable support such as trellis or a free standing climbing frame. Try using our sweet pea support rings to tie the stems to their growing supports while they become established.
Feed and water Lathyrus latifolius plants regularly throughout the growing season. Deadhead faded blooms to prevent seedpods developing. This will encourage more blooms to be produced and extend the flowering period throughout summer. Cut back old stems to ground level when they begin yellow in autumn, and apply a mulch of well rotted organic matter in spring. Caution: harmful if eaten.
