Pot up rudbeckia plants and grow them on for transplanting outdoors later on. When plants are well-grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days before planting into their final positions. Grow rudbeckia plants in sun or semi shade. Rudbeckia enjoys a fertile, preferably heavy soil that is rich in organic matter and well drained. Coneflowers resent drought and dislike soils that dry out in summer.
Feed and water rudbeckia plants regularly. Deadhead faded rudbeckia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut plants down to the crown at the end of the season and cover with a dry mulch of straw or wood chippings to protect from winter extremes.

Wow, I so hope these plants come back next year because they have given an amazing display for many weeks and still as I write in early October, they just go on giving. No need to dead head, the same blooms stay on the plant, even surviving through torrential rain and high winds. Perhaps I was lucky enough to find their perfect place in a well-drained soil in full sun but I can't fault them for such wonderful colours and staying power. The best plant in the border!

Beautiful Vibrant blooms

All but one of these, 6 rudbeckia jumbo plug plants, have thrived this summer. The 'runt' is hanging in there so with love and aftercare I am hoping that they all survive the winter and return next year. Although unpromising to look at initially they thrive in the right conditions. We've very much enjoyed seeing such beautiful vibrant colourful flowers throughout the summer and would recommend. They make beautiful cut flowers too.
