Hosta undulata var. undulata (Large Plant)

Hosta 'Mediovariegata', Hosta 'Argentea Variegata', Plantain Lily

Hardy Perennial

Hosta undulata var. undulata gives funnel shaped, lavender blue flowers on tall spikes, which are held above the neat, weatherproof clumps of foliage. The bright green leaves have a curious, twisted growth habit which gives them a fascinating appearance.

Hosta undulata var. undulata is an RHS AGM variety, which makes a fabulous addition to borders, woodland gardens and patio containers, producing the best colour in a shady position. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Culinary note: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Water Hosta plants regularly throughout summer until fully established. In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
