Pot up hellebore plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside. When plants are well grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant hellebores in neutral or alkaline soil, in dappled shade. Hellebores prefer a moist, humus rich, fertile soil that does not dry out in summer or sit waterlogged in winter. When growing hellebores on heavy clay or free draining gravel soils, add plenty of well rotted leaf mould or other organic matter to the soil prior to planting.
Mulch hellebores with well rotted manure or garden compost each spring. Hellebores resent disturbance after planting and may take some time to re-establish. However when clumps become overcrowded, lifting and dividing of hellebores should be undertaken immediately after flowering. Caution: Hellebore sap may irritate the skin and eyes. All parts are harmful if eaten.

My hellebore plants arrived a week ago, and they are looking marvellous. They are bigger than I would have expected, well rooted, each in it's own little growing cell, which has given me time to prepare my border to put them in. I must get a move on now because some are already sending up longer shoots in the centre of the plant, so I'm hardening them off ready for the next fine day. I'm most impressed by the number of leaves on each plant. Once fully unfurled from the packaging, they looked as decorative as my own potted house plants, and their leaves are so sculptural! If I hadn't know that hellebores were very hardy plants I'd have been tempted to keep them indoors for decoration. It seems greedy to expect flowers too – but I'm really looking forward to finding out what colours they are.
