Pot up geum plants and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions until large enough to be transplanted outdoors. Once well grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Geums dislike soils which are prone to waterlogging in winter. Plant them in moist, fertile, well drained soil, adding plenty of compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay or sandy soils. Choose a position towards the front of the border in full sun.
Water Avens plants regularly until fully established. Regular deadheading will encourage more flowers to be produced throughout the summer. In spring, lift and divide overcrowded clumps of geum to maintain their vigour.

I wanted a red Geum to complement the orange ‘Mrs. Bradshaw’ I have in front of my flower border. To my horror, I now have a monster metre tall spindly red flowered thing that completely swamps the 60cm ‘Mrs. Bradshaw’ as well as anything else in the vicinity. It’s so tall I don’t know where to put it. Needs lots of support, is unstable in rain, is red but not the blazing sunset red I expected and not all the flowers are double. The description on the T&M page states the height of ‘Blazing Sunset’ is 24” or 60cm. No. This plant is a full metre in height and ugly with it. A disappointment I have to remove from my flower bed to save the charm of ‘Mrs. Bradshaw’ and the other plants.

My garden is covered in the wild relative of this plant so I thought it was worth giving it a try. They really are lovely, long lasting, bright red flowers and multiple flowers per plant. The flowers are also larger than I was expecting. I liked them so much this year I'll be buying more for next summer.
