Foxglove 'Illumination Ruby Slippers'

Digitalis x valinii

Half-hardy Biennial

  • New colour break
  • Multi-flowering Foxgloves
  • Prennial habit

The Digitalis Illumination Series, from our very own breeding programme, has changed the world of Foxgloves; taking them from a wiry, brief-blooming biennial wildflower to a handsome, tidy yet shrubby perennial with true garden performance.

Following several outstanding colour developments, our breeding team has done it again with the creation of a brand new colour break. Digitalis 'Illumination Ruby Slippers' is the latest addition to our award winning series. This beautiful foxglove produces multiple spires of open-mouthed blooms on short stocky plants that are just as at home in a patio pot as a cottage garden border scheme. Being completely sterile, this stunning Foxglove won't set seed, making it incredibly long flowering. As the main flower spike fades, multiple sideshoots spring up to offer five months of vivid floral colour. Parentage from the little-known Isoplexis (Canary Island Foxglove) gives this exciting new Digitalis its fabulous colouring and perennial habit. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 45cm (18")

Pot up digitalis plants and grow them on in frost free conditions for transplanting outdoors later on. When plants are well-grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in borders and containers in sun or partial shade. If plants are received in the autumn, pot them up and grow them on in cool, bright, frost-free conditions over winter. Although foxgloves prefer a fertile, moist soil, they will happily tolerate almost any soil except those that are excessively dry or waterlogged.
Water foxglove plants regularly until fully established. Foxgloves self-seed freely. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead stems of foxglove flowers as the blooms fade. In autumn, cut back old stems to encourage plenty of new side shoots.

Reviews
  1. Lovely colours

Considering I only planted my two plants in May they flowered their socks off for a good couple of months, lovely rich velvety colours. Leave a nice clean rosette of leaves after deadheading.
