Acclimatise orchids to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, prior to planting outdoors in their final positions. Grow terrestrial orchids in a sheltered position in dappled shade on rich, fertile, well drained, moist soil. Dig in plenty of well rotted leaf mould or similar organic matter prior to planting. Cypripedium requires an acid to neutral, reliably moist soil that does not dry out in summer or sit waterlogged in winter.
Water hardy orchids during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. In autumn apply a mulch of well rotted leaf mould or bark chips to protect the crown of the plant during the winter months. Divide over-crowded clumps in spring to increase their longevity. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
