Agapanthus 'Sweet Surprise' (Large Plant)

African Blue Lily

Hardy Perennial

Agapanthus 'Sweet Surprise' bears umbels of pale blue flowers from late June to August. When fully open, each bloom has a delightful star-shape with a distinctive dark blue stripe along the centre of each petal. The stiff, upright stems rise above clumps of linear, semi-evergreen foliage that makes useful ground cover. African Blue Lilies are tough and resilient, needing little maintenance. This neat compact variety is perfect for brightening up patio containers and punctuating the front of perennial borders with its architectural blooms. Makes a good cut flower too! Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Grow Agapanthus plants in rich fertile, well drained soil, in a sunny position. When growing Agapanthus in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3 .
Feed and water African Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded.
