Actaea cordifolia (Large Plant)

Cimicifuga racemosa var. cordifolia, Bugbane, Cohosh

Hardy Perennial

 Customer Rating

Cimicifuga is an attractive border perennial with an exotic appearance. Actaea has a robust habit, and can fill a gap in the border with its fancy foliage and summer flower spikes, which are tall and imposing.

The flower spikes of Actaea are made up of many tiny florets, and these have a spicy fragrance. Cimicifuga is a long-lasting plant, surviving for many years, and is very useful for difficult situations, such as cold, wet corners of the garden. Height: 1m (39"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Plant out Cimicifuga plants into a reliably moist, fertile, well-drained soil in semi or dappled shade.
Young foliage may be susceptible to late frosts, so plant into a sheltered position. The tall flower stems of Baneberry will benefit from staking with plant supports as they grow. Leave faded Actaea flowers in place throughout autumn as the rounded seedpods provide interesting silhouettes in autumn borders. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Cimicifuga in spring.

  1. 2 out of 3 are great

    By Robert Webster 09-11-2015

Ordered 3 of these (2+1foc) in Sept. 2 of them are growing well and look healthy, 1 died and was replaced (thanks T&M) but the replacement is a sorry looking plant so I will pot on and leave in the greenhouse over winter but I don't have much hope of it surviving.

Thank you for your review. I am glad to learn that two of your plants have been successful, although I am sorry to learn that your full order is not up to standard. If you do have any further queries or problems with your plants, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Care Team at
