Begonia semperflorens 'Summer Jewels Mixed'

Half-hardy Perennial

Compact begonia semperflorens are traditionally used in bedding and container displays. Now you can add a garden favourite to your summer hanging baskets, thanks to guaranteed cascading performance. These begonia semperflorens plants offer trailing, flower-laden stems, ensuring the look you are after when it comes to your hanging basket displays. Inbuilt garden performance guarantees that the tough, resilient stems will persist with flowers until the first hard frosts of winter. Pot up Begonia plug plants into 9cm pots and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions, away from direct sun. They can be transplanted into their final containers once they have increased in size. When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise begonia plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in their final positions in containers, beds and borders. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds.
Feed and water plants frequently throughout the growing season taking care not to over-water, as this will cause new flower buds to drop. Deadhead the single female flowers to encourage more of the large double male flowers to be produced. At the end of the growing season the leaves and stems will yellow and fall off naturally. Reduce watering to prevent begonia plants from rotting at this stage. When the stems have all dropped away, dig out the tubers. Clean and dry them before storing them away in peat or sand at 7-15C (45-60F) until they can be replanted next February.
