Sparaxis 'Red Reflex'

Harlequin Flower

Half-hardy Corm

Also known as Harlequin Flower, this exotic-looking plant produces red funnel-shaped flowers, each with a contrasting black and yellow centre. These eye-catching blooms emerge above sword-shaped foliage from midsummer through to early autumn and are held on sturdy stems which are ideal for cutting. Plant Sparaxis 'Red Reflex' in groups for the most dramatic display in rock gardens, greenhouses or sheltered borders where winter protection can be provided. We only have limited quantities of this choice bulb, so snap them up quickly! Bulb size 5/6. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 10cm (4").

Grow sparaxis bulbs in containers, raised beds or sheltered borders in any well drained soil in full sun. Plant them at a depth of 10cm (4"). In frost prone areas, they are best grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, or planted in containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. Use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2 with added grit to improve drainage.
Feed harlequin flower bulbs monthly and water moderately while they are in active growth. After flowering, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out in order to provide the bulbs with a dry, dormant period. Sparaxis bulbs that are grown outdoors should be mulched with chipped bark to protect them from cold wet weather over winter. Move patio containers to a frost free position over winter.
