Oxalis versicolor

Striped-flowered Wood Sorrel

Half-hardy Bulb

A half hardy alpine with the most fascinating buds, like striped candy canes! In late summer and autumn the flowers of Oxalis versicolour open to reveal cupped white petals with bright raspberry margins. These delicate, spreading perennials make captivating specimens for a frost free greenhouse or conservatory. In particularly mild and sheltered sites they may be grown outdoors in rock gardens or alpine troughs, but should be protected from frost at all times. Height: 10cm (4”) Spread: 20cm (8”). Bulb size: 3/4.

Outdoors, grow oxalis plants in containers or in sheltered rockeries and borders. In frost prone areas it is best grown as a houseplant on a bright windowsill or in a conservatory or greenhouse. Plant oxalis corms at a depth of 3cm (1") in well drained, rich fertile soil, or for indoor cultivation, in a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2. Position in full sun or light shade.
After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it. Oxalis bulbs require a short period of dormancy in summer during which time the compost should be allowed to dry out a little so that it is kept just moist. Resume feeding and watering when oxalis plants start into growth again.
