Hardy Tree

A magnificent specimen tree for a larger garden or woodland. Davidia involucrata is a breathtaking sight in May. Its astonishing flowers are surrounded by large white bracts, which hang from the branches like handkerchiefs or resting doves. With maturity, this large, deciduous species forms a broad, conical tree with lovely heart shaped leaves and smooth grey bark. This handsome RHS AGM variety is a real talking point. Grow Davidia involcrata in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade with shelter from strong winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
In the first few years after planting, water Handkerchief Trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. Davidia trees will naturally form a handsome conical shaped tree provided that a strong central leader is maintained during its formative years. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in winter if necessary.
