Davidia involucrata var. vilmoriniana (Large Plant)

Handkerchief Tree, Dove Tree

Hardy Tree

This magnificent handkerchief tree was considered by its founder to be the most 'beautiful and interesting of all trees of the north temperature flora'. Davidia involucrate var. vilmoriniana is a medium size deciduous tree, with a broad oval to pyramid habit and scaly bark. Small, dark green flower clusters are subtended by a pair of creamy-white, ovate bracts, which are said to resemble dangling handkerchiefs.

This handsome RHS AGM variety produces bright green, broadly ovate leaves, which often turn a beautiful yellow in autumn, and bears greenish-brown ovoid fruits after flowering. Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26').

Grow Davidia involcrata in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade with shelter from strong winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
In the first few years after planting, water Handkerchief Trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. Davidia trees will naturally form a handsome conical shaped tree provided that a strong central leader is maintained during its formative years. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in winter if necessary.
