Pot up silk tree plants and grow them on in a cool, bright position until large enough to plant outside. Prior to transplanting, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant albizia in a sheltered position in any well drained soil in full sun. Albizia ‘Summer Chocolate’ is hardy down to -5°C (23°F). In particularly cold areas, it is best grown in a cool conservatory or planted in a patio container that can be moved to a sheltered position over winter.
Prune silk trees in winter or early spring, reducing the stems to fit the available space, and removing any damaged, crossing or wayward branches entirely. Albizia may be successfully wall trained. During the first few years prune to achieve a permanent framework of stems. Thereafter the stems of wall trained albizia can be reduced annually to within 4 buds from the permanent framework. Caution: Albizia seedpods are toxic if eaten.

  1. This has potential

    By Peter Humphrey 01-09-2011

When this plant arrived in 2010 I thought this is not going to go far. I potted said plant in a slightly larger pot and left it outside until the first frosts. It was then transferred to the greenhouse and left over winter, where it started to grow. When the frosts were over it was repotted and brought outside and has been growing new leaves as if there were no tomorrow, a pretty little tree. I am pleased that I put it under cover due to the hard frosts last year. I will mulch it in its position in the garden and keep a close watch.I hope that next year it continues its growth and a happy gardener I will be .

  2. Growing well

I thought this was a small specimen for a tree when it arrived in it's as stated 8cm pot. It was repotted on arrival and watered with rain water ( I live in a hard water area ). As the weather warmed off it went with the striking foliage colour being obvious straight away. It may be a while before it gets to it's 6m full hieght. In the mean time it 's ferny purple leaves are great to look down on.
