Prunus tomentosa (Large Plant)

Downy Cherry

Hardy Shrub

The Downy Cherry is a very hardy, deciduous shrub that has broad, wide shape rather than the traditional "tree" form you would expect from a Cherry. Prunus tomentosa produces pale pink flowers with a delicate fragrance in spring, before the leaves appear, these will develop into bright red fruits by the autumn, much loved by wildlife. The foliage will later turn to yellows and oranges, giving you a final colourful display at the end of the season before they drop. Grow Prunus tomentosa in woodland settings, or as part of a large shrub collection where it the berries will really stand out from the crowd!, Height: 250cm (978"). Spread: 300cm (118").

Plant cherry trees in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun.
Water Prunus trees regularly until fully established. Ornamental cherries require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. When pruning cherries it is preferable to wait until midsummer to avoid the risk of 'silver leaf' infection. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stem.
