Peony 'Candy Stripe'

Paeonia lactiflora, Paeonia

Hardy Perennial

  • Possibly the prettiest spring bloom you could grow
  • Classic cottage garden favourite with a modern twist
  • Marbled, fragrant spring flowers bring years of pleasure

Peonies are a cottage garden staple. We’ve kept the classic shape and style with our latest introduction, but offer a modern twist with the unique flower marbling and strong fruity fragrance of Peony ‘Candy Stripe’. We recommend the use of plant supports with Peony ‘Candy Stripe’ to preserve and enjoy the large silky, powderpuff blooms for as long as possible. Peonies last a lifetime in the garden, getting bigger and better with age, so are always worth the investment. Make use of the addictive blooms in cutflower displays too. Height: 90cm (35"). Spread: 90cm (35").

Culinary note: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm (2") below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering.
Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring. Plants may take several years to establish before they produce their spectacular peony flowers.
