Mahonia confusa 'Nara Hiri' (Large Plant)

Oregon Grape

Hardy Shrub

A low, spreading variety of this evergreen shrub, Mahonia confusa 'Nara Hiri' is ideal for planting at the back of a border or even as groundcover in a woodland garden. The soft, glossy green foliage is adorned with lemon-yellow flowers from October to December. The Oregon Grape, as is otherwise known, is tolerant to most soil conditions and thrives in full shade where most other plants will struggle to grow. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 150cm (59").

Culinary note: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow Mahonia plants in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
Mahonia plants require little pruning but may benefit from a trim in spring to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
