Golden Elderberry (Hedging)

Sambucus nigra 'Aurea'

Hardy Shrub

The bright golden yellow leaves of the Golden Elderberry make it a hedge that stands out and will make itself noticed. The large leaves of this deciduous large shrub form a dense covering, making it an ideal windbreak or screen. During the summer months it will be covered in the characteristic clusters of tiny, creamy white flowers which later develop into the well known elderberries, which are loved by birds. A good choice for a decorative and wildlife friendly hedge. Supplied as 50 - 80cm bareroots (20 - 31") Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils.
Elderberry require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too tall after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning.
