Camellia 'High Fragrance'

Hardy Shrub

  • The most powerfully fragrant Camellia of all!
  • Ideal size for small gardens or mixed shrubberies
  • Ideal solution for shady corners

Despite their dazzling early season display, most camellias are lacking when it comes to scent, so Camellia ‘High Fragrance’ marks a major breeding breakthrough for this ever-popular genus. Light-pink, semi-double flowers fill the garden with the sweetest perfume from January through March, when little else is in bloom. Excellent for helping to support early-season pollinators and the first bees of the season. Slow growth, evergreen foliage and a demure mature height make Camellia ‘High Fragrance’ the perfect shrub option for small gardens and container displays. Height: 1.8m (6’

Culinary note: The flowers can be used as garnishes but are also dried and then cooked in Asian cuisine. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
