Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Tower' (Large Plant)

Elder

Hardy Shrub

If you love dark foliage but have limited space then look no further than Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Black Tower'. This striking Elder is dense and compact, with an upright habit that's ideal for smaller borders or as a stand-alone specimen. The large leaves emerge green but quickly darken to deep burgundy when grown in full sun. Flattened heads of fragrant pink flowers complement the dark leaves, and are later replaced by glossy black elderberries. This deciduous shrub is easy to grow and makes a memorable feature in even the smallest garden. Height: 2.5m (8'). Spread: 1.2m (4').

Culinary note: The flower heads are commonly used in infusions, making a very common drink and can be made into a syrup or cordial. They can also be dipped into a light batter and then fried to make elderflower fritters. Both flowers and berries can be made into elderberry wine. Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils.
Sambucus plants require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too large after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.

    By sandra coyne 15-08-2016

as above 2 battered small plants left in bin store no identification or care instructions and no idea what the plants were as I have ordered a couple of plants but I feel this will be my last order with yourselves as you couldn't even label the poor specimens that arrived and as I have paid not a small amount for the plants very very disappointed just hope they survive

  2. Is this it?

    By R W L Cooper 14-08-2016

2 small slightly battered plants emerged. No identification or meaningful care instructions - you need to know which classification it falls into. Fingers crossed with a lot of care a decent plant will appear over time. Probably good value, but as an inexperienced customer, I had no warning of the tiny little poorly baby that was to arrive.
