Pyracantha coccinea 'Red Column' (Large Plant)

Firethorn

Hardy Shrub

For impenetrable security planting; Pyracantha 'Red Column' is ideal, forming dense, prickly shrub in the garden. This attractive variety is a particularly upright form. During the summer, plants produce sprays of bright white summer blooms, followed by eye-catching displays of sparkling red berries, providing food to the birds through the colder months.

Pyracantha can be trained against a wall or grown as a hedge, and is very easy to clip and maintain. Firethorn plants are extremely tough and hardy, making an easy to grow shrub for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 2.4m (8').

Grow Pyracantha plants as free-standing shrubs train as a hedge, or grow against a wall or fence. Plant Firethorn into any well drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds.
Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until full established. Prune free-standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework, and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem. After flowering in summer, shorten the remaining stems to 3 leaves from the base, in order to expose the developing berries, and maximise the display. Remove any old fruit trusses in spring to make room for new growth. Caution: harmful if eaten.
Due to local government restrictions, we are no longer able to supply this variety to the Channel Islands.
