Hamamelis x intermedia 'Arnold Promise'

Witch Hazel

Hardy Shrub

 Customer Rating
  • Fragrant bright yellow flowers
During the bleak winter months, this deciduous shrub bears an explosion of sulphur yellow blooms. The sweetly scented, shaggy flowers of Hamamelis intermedia 'Arnold Promise' cling resiliently to its leafless twigs. The summer foliage of Witch Hazel forms a simple backdrop for summer flowering perennials, before turning to vibrant shades of brilliant orange and red in autumn. Awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit, this majestic specimen shrub is ideal for adding colour and interest to mixed borders and woodland gardens throughout the year. Height and spread: 3.5m (11'). Supplied as a single 20cm (approx) stem.

Grow Witch Hazel in borders in non-alkaline, rich fertile, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Prune hamamelis in spring, immediately after flowering. Remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the shrub.

  1. Happy little sapling

    By Juliet Foster 10-05-2015

This arrived as a miniature twig with not much to say for itself but after a few weeks in a good compost, it is putting out leaves like they're going out of fashion and thriving in a fairly shady spot. Lovely little tree that will keep on growing and make late winter more colourful in the garden. Well worth the investment for a good, native tree that has made itself part of our culture for centuries. Lovely specimen plant and companion for shad tolerant annuals and perennials alike.
