Carolina Allspice (Large Plant)

Carolina Allspice

Hardy Shrub

This unique shrub seems to be one of gardening's best kept secrets! Its fragrant blooms resemble tiny deep red water lilies with an irresistible scent of stewed apples and cinnamon. Crush the aromatic glossy foliage for a rich, spicier fragrance. Best known by its common name of Carolina allspice, Calycanthus floridus is a well behaved deciduous shrub, but gives the appearance of an evergreen with its glossy green leaves. An ideal choice for woodland edges and large shrub borders, but best grown in a position where its exquisite perfume can be fully appreciated. Height: 2.5m (8'). Spread: 3m (10').

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Acclimatise Calycanthus plants to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Grow Calycanthus in borders, in moist, fertile, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in full sun. Water regularly until Carolina allspice plants are fully established.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, prune Calycanthus floridus in early spring as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems to a low permanent framework, 3 or 4 buds from the base of the plant. After pruning Carolina allspice, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Calycanthus is harmful if eaten.
