Euphorbia 'Ascot Rainbow'

Euphorbia x martini, Spurge

  • Ideal for difficult dry gardens
  • Year-round interest
  • Vivid spring flowerheads

It’s hard to convey the myriad of colour changes this showy foliage plant goes through each season. Here goes! The strap-like stripy leaves emerge with an intense pink flush, maturing to grey-green with yellow margins and red markings. The plants also take on a pink tinge during the coldest parts of winter. This is all topped off in spring with a display of billowing flowerheads in vivid shades of green, yellow, cream and red. Height and spread: 90cm (36").

  • Mix with your favourite spring bedding or other early perennials

Seasonal flower colour is what we do best! We’re pleased to add this hardy late spring perennial to our books so you can bridge the gap between spring and summer displays. Berkheya purpurea

Purple Sunflower, South African Thistle

  • The thistle that thinks it’s a sunflower!
  • Unusual border flower
  • Excellent dried cut flower

Nicknamed the 'purple sunflower', this shining beauty makes a fantastic border plant, producing a neat, ground-hugging rosette of thistle-like foliage and a striking flower stem that demands attention in any planting display. The gently prickled leaves make it a good plant to discourage pets and other unwanted visitors away from your prized borders!

Like many other South African species, Berkheya plants are very undemanding, simply requiring a sunny spot on free draining soil. Multiple flowers appear in late summer in a silvery shade of soft violet, creating a real wow factor. The stems make unusual fresh or dried cutflowers. Best planted under a south-facing wall and given some winter frost protection in colder parts of the UK. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Ribes speciosum

Californian currant, Fuchsia-flowered currant

  • The most exotic-looking currant
  • Dangling red blooms just like a fuchsia
  • Grow natural or train as a wall shrub

This hardy ornamental currant could be mistaken for a scarlet fuchsia! But no fuchsia will flower in the garden in January! Ribes speciosum is one of the best shrubs you can add to the winter scene, flowering at the same time as the earliest daffodils. Frost hardy, coming with an RHS Award of Garden Merit, it really is a sight to behold when trained tall on a sunny wall. It’s hanging rich-red blooms and ‘varnished’ green foliage hide prickly stems - a perfectly pretty security plant. Also makes a decorative hedging plant, coping well with regular pruning. Height: 250cm (98"). Spread: 150cm (59").
