Heuchera hybrida 'Melting Fire'

Coral Flower, Coral Bells

Hardy Perennial

The deeply curled foliage of Heuchera hybrida 'Melting Fire' emerges a rich blood red colour and matures to a dark shade of purple-red. This eye-catching coral flower is strong growing, forming large clumps of foliage with good weather tolerance. Admired for their long season of interest, Heucheras are ideal for adding colourful, semi-evergreen foliage to borders and mixed containers. Height and spread: 40cm (16").

Culinary note: The leaves can be tossed in with other greens for a mixed salad, typically too bitter to eat on their own, they will add a tangy kick to an otherwise bland salad. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sow heuchera from March to June on the surface of a good seed compost and cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-21C (64-70F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the compost moist but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 21-60 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When heuchera plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors, 40cm (16") apart, moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi shade.

Feed and water coral flower plants regularly until they are fully established.Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant each spring. Lift and divide clumps of heuchera plants every 3 years in autumn to maintain vigorous, healthy growth.
