Variegated Porcelain Vine

Ampelopsis brevipedunculata ver. maximowiczii 'Elegans', Porcelain Berry

Hardy Perennial

  • Beautiful hardy climber
  • Seasonal interest
Native to woodland in Asia, this deciduous hardy climber is easy to grow and makes a fascinating addition to wall, fences, sheds or trellis. Marbled green and white leaves, with hints of pink, adorn vigorous stems which climb with the aid of pink tendrils. Clusters of insignificant green flowers in mid to late summer are followed by breathtaking bright blue and violet berries in the autumn! Grow Porcelain Vine against a sheltered wall or fence where it will die back during the winter and return with vigour the following spring. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 2.5m (8').

Pot up Ampelopsis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant out in their final positions. When they are well grown, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. If you receive your plants in the autumn, over-winter them in a cold frame or against a sheltered wall. Plant Porcelain Vine against a suitable, sturdy support such as trellis or strong wires attached to sheltered walls and fences, in fertile, moist, free draining soil. Poor soils can be improved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. Choose a warm, sheltered position in sun or semi-shade for the best fruiting.
Feed and water Porcelain Berry vines regularly throughout the growing season until they are fully established. Cut back dead stems to ground level in the autumn. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Harmful if eaten.
