Clematis koreana 'Amber'

Old Man's Beard

  • Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2016
  • Rare, yellow double-blooms
The star of the show at the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show! This new award winner is a must have for your garden with almost yellow, large delicate heads, that will nod gently in the breeze. Very few of the 2,000 clematis varieties that we know of in the world are yellow, making Amber just that little bit more special. Each double-flowered bloom features a delicate pink tinge on the back of the petals and will look simply stunning climbing up a trellis in your borders or on the patio. Perfect for attracting bees and butterflies to your garden. Flowers from early May through to June giving a second flush in September. Height: 2-2.4m (6-8’). Pruning group 1.

When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in summer on new stems which develop from the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in spring before active growth begins. When pruning group 2 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
