The colourful foliage of this half hardy fountain grass emerges with bold stripes of red, pink and green, before maturing to a rich shade of burgundy. From mid-summer to autumn, the showy purple flower spikes rise above the arching foliage in a spectacular architectural display. Pennisetum 'Fireworks' makes a lively addition to bedding displays and patio containers. The fluffy seedheads can be also cut to make elegant dried flowers. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Pot up plants and grow them on in warm frost free conditions for transplanting into beds, borders and containers later on. Water sparingly until pennisetum plants are fully rooted into their containers. When they are well grown, and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant fountain grass in moist, light, well drained soil in full sun.
Water when necessary to prevent the soil from drying out. Take care not to overwater as Pennisetum will rot in wet soils. Pennisetum setaceum 'Fireworks' is often grown as an annual. However, where plants are grown in containers they may be moved to a frost free position over winter. Apply a dry mulch such as bark or straw to protect the crown of the plant. Cut back dead foliage in spring.

  1. So disapointed

    By Angela Hopper 07-08-2015

I purchased three of these grasses as jumbo plugs, and none has grown more than a couple of centimetres. As soon as I received them I potted each into a container, and have cared for them as advised on the information sheet. I would have thought that by now, the plants would be looking bushy and healthy. I also purchased some bedding plug plants earlier in the year, and these have only just filled out and started flowering. I think I will go back to the garden centre in future, at least I can see what I am buying there.

  2. Big improvement

    By Carol Blight 05-08-2015

After contacting the Customer Care team a replacement plug plant was sent. This was a sturdier looking plant which now appears to be establishing itself happily. i'm hoping it will survive its first winter and look forward to the first flowers.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am so pleased your replacement has produced a strong display so far. I hope we can continue to be of service to you in the future.
