Sow on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag place at a temperature of at 20C (69F). If after 3 weeks no germination has occurred, place the container in a refrigerator (not freezer) at 5C (40F) for 3-4 weeks, then move the container back to the warmer temperature as indicated above. Germination can be erratic but usually takes between 30 and 150 days. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and do not exclude light, as this helps germination When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into trays or 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors.

When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise ophiopogon plants to outdoor conditions prior to transplanting them outdoors in any rich, fertile non-alkaline soil in full sun at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

Lilyturf requires little aftercare but will appreciate a dry mulch of bark chips or leaf mould in autumn. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps in spring when necessary.
