Keep currant plants well watered during dry periods, particularly as the fruits are developing. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Currants can be harvested from July.

After planting reduce the stems of blackcurrant bushes to 2 buds above ground level to promote sturdy new growth. After the first season, prune out any thin or weak shoots. In the following years prune out any damaged or weak shoots before removing 20% of the remaining stems to create an open bush, and encourage fresh now shoots to develop.

Whitecurrants and redcurrants form fruit on 2 year old wood, so after planting the leading shoots need only be pruned by half to encourage branching. In subsequent years, reduce any new growth by half. Take care not to cut back into the previous year's wood unless removing the occasional weak or damaged stem to encourage healthy new shoots to develop.
