Description
A much-discussed plant, as it can sometimes be spotted in hedgerows in the UK, and is recognisable by its colourful seed heads. The wood from the Spindle Bush was originally used for making spindles, hence the name. Euonymus europaeus is a large, deciduous shrub, which is fairly un-noticeable during the summer, but by autumn the foliage has turned an amazing scarlet. Then, as if that wasn't enough, the small flowers fade, and winged fruits appear, which are orange and red Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Grow Euonymus europaeus plants on moist, but well-drained soil in full sun or partisl shade. Plants will tolerate exposed and coastal gardens, and may give better autumn colour when grown in full sun.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Plants of the Spindle Bush are low maintenance and require very little pruning- simply trim them to remove any dead, diseased or damaged growth.
