There's no need to grow autumn and summer fruiting varieties when you choose Raspberry Sugana. This productive variety produces crops from August to October, but unlike other varieties, leave the canes in place while training the new shoots and pick a second crop the following June, before the new canes start to crop for you in August, starting the cycle all over again. This vigorous raspberry is ideal for those with limited space, canes can even be grown in containers with no reduction in cropping potential, each firm fruit weighs an average 5.4g. Height: 1.5m (59"). Spread: 50cm (20").

How to Grow

Grow summer fruiting raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems of these long caned summer fruiting raspberries will require support. Before planting, prepare a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m (6’) posts. When growing raspberries in containers, support their tall stems on a wigwam of canes.

Plant raspberry canes against their supports, allowing a distance of 60cm (24") between plants. Water well. Canes should be pruned to 15cm (6") above ground level immediately after planting to encourage more shoots to be produced.

Water summer fruiting raspberries well for the first year until plants are fully established. Loosely tie the stems in to their support wires as they grow. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be ‘tied in’ to their supports. Aim to have 6 to 8 fruiting canes per plant. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
