Description
These slow growing, self fertile, evergreen trees are normally associated with the Mediterranean but you can now grow these highly decorative plants very successfully in the UK. Attractive grey-green foliage atop a tall slender stem makes this Olive Tree standard an elegant and modern addition to the garden. In long, hot summers the small fragrant flowers are followed by smooth green fruits. Olive trees can be grown in very sheltered gardens or large containers, and make an attractive and productive addition to the patio. Height: 150cm (59"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Olives are best grown in large containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No.3 that can be moved to a cold greenhouse or sheltered position during the winter months. In very mild areas, plant olive trees in the ground in any neutral to alkaline soil in a sheltered position in full sun. Avoid planting in very fertile soils as this will encourage vegetative growth instead of fruits. Prior to planting drive a stake into the planting hole to support the tree once it is planted. Plant Olives at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and use a tree tie to fasten the tree to the stake.
More Info

Olive trees do not suffer weed competition well, so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Water olive trees well during dry periods particularly during the first 2 or 3 years whilst they are establishing.

Minimal pruning is required. Prune Olive trees in late spring or early summer, removing old unproductive branches and misplaced growth to encourage new shoots.

Young olive trees will appreciate some winter protection from hard frosts. Container grown plants should be moved to a sheltered position or cold greenhouse.
